First 2009 DSACT Medical Presentation
is a Success!

The first DSACT Presentation to Central Texas obstetricians was held on Monday, February 16th, and it was very successful!
There was a full house of Central Texas OBs, representing at least seven 7) different OB/Gyn practices. DSACT Health Care Co-Chair Suzanne Shepherd and Dr. Adam Barta presented information about Down syndrome, medical information, and how to deliver a diagnosis. The committee then introduced the OB groups to individuals with Down syndrome through the new DSACT video "Down Syndrome in the 21st Century." Dr. Jon Pierce-Shimomura and Board member Tiffany Young discussed their experiences in receiving the diagnosis and living with a child who has Down syndrome. Board member Jeanette Holahan rounded out the luncheon by discussing her experiences receiving a prenatal diagnosis and counseling other families, and highlighted the DSACT new parent support committee and materials.
The DSACT committee handed out 7 boxes of materials, each to a different OB/GYN group, and left 2 boxes for Seton's Labor - Delivery Department. We hope these efforts will have an impact on the level of referrals DSACT receives, and will improve the way in which new parents get their diagnosis.

Congratulations and thanks to organizer Suzanne Shepherd. Without you, this wouldn't have been possible! Many thanks to DSACT Board members volunteers Jeanette Holahan, Tiffany Young, Dr. Jon Pierce-Shimomura, and Dr. Adam Barta.
The committee is planning quarterly presentations throughout 2009.  If you would like to volunteer to coordinate or participate in future presentations, please contact the DSACT office at 512-323-0808.

DSACT Proudly Presents:
"Down Syndrome in the 21st Century"

DSACT is pleased to release our new video "Down Syndrome in the 21st Century." This video profiles individuals with Down Syndrome from infancy through adulthood doing remarkable things and contributing to their families and communities in ways that were not thought possible ten or twenty years ago.

The video is ideal for new or expectant parents, educators, physicians or other health care professionals,  and the community, and provides a current, first-hand view of individuals with Down Syndrome today.

The video features only people from Central Texas, and we had no idea when we started how many stars we have right here in the Austin area!
